Role Overview

Africa Digital Growth is hiring a reliable hands on Farm Worker Assistant to support the Farm Coordinator in cultivating and harvesting crops on our 1.8 acre plot and in preparing produce for the farm shop and CSA orders. This is a practical role that combines field work with basic packing and crate handling. The role is ideal for someone with farming experience who wants stable work and the chance to learn improved crop management practices.

Key responsibilities

  1. Carry out daily field tasks including planting, transplanting, weeding, watering, mulching and basic pest control under direction of the Farm Coordinator
  2. Harvest crops carefully and at the correct maturity for market or CSA packing
  3. Wash, trim and pack produce to the quality standards set by the Farm Coordinator and the Farm Shop Manager
  4. Load and unload crates, move harvest to storage or packing area and return crates to the crate pool as required
  5. Operate and maintain basic tools and equipment such as pumps, hoses, hand tools and wheelbarrows, reporting faults and arranging simple repairs when needed
  6. Assist with irrigation setup and monitoring, including checking for leaks and ensuring even water distribution
  7. Follow post harvest handling and food safety procedures to prevent contamination and spoilage
  8. Help maintain cleanliness of the packing area, storage container and farm site including waste management and composting tasks
  9. Record simple logs daily for tasks completed, crates used and produce volumes to support inventory and yield tracking
  10. Work on market or delivery days to assist packing and loading when required

Typical day to day tasks

  1. Arrive early for field work and check in with the Farm Coordinator
  2. Complete assigned field tasks and irrigation checks before mid morning
  3. Participate in harvest and move produce to packing station for washing and packing
  4. Return empty crates to designated area and tidy storage space
  5. Update simple logs and report any pest, disease or equipment issues to the Farm Coordinator

Required qualifications and experience

  1. Primary or secondary school certificate
  2. At least 1 year practical experience working on vegetable or smallholder farms preferred
  3. Familiarity with basic farm tools and simple irrigation systems is an advantage

Skills and attributes

  1. Physically fit and able to lift and carry crates of produce regularly
  2. Reliable with good time keeping and a strong work ethic
  3. Willing to work outdoors in all weather and to start early mornings
  4. Able to follow instructions and complete repetitive tasks accurately
  5. Basic numeracy and ability to complete short written logs or use a simple phone based form
  6. Honest, trustworthy and punctual

Working conditions

  1. Physically active role with regular lifting and manual handling
  2. Early starts and market day or weekend work may be required
  3. On site presence is required; accommodation can be discussed for the right candidate
  4. Protective equipment and safety training will be provided

Performance indicators

  1. Attendance and punctuality rate
  2. Percentage of harvested produce meeting quality standards
  3. Accuracy and timeliness of daily logs and crate returns
  4. Reduction in spoilage or waste from assigned tasks
  5. Ability to follow food safety and packing procedures

Compensation and benefits

  1. Competitive wage based on experience, available as daily or monthly pay depending on arrangement
  2. Small performance bonus tied to quality and reliability, if applicable
